RWW 194 Display Shelf Part 2

In this episode I finish up the construction of the display shelf by making shelf panels, slats, sizing them, and assembling the whole piece. Specifically I detail more of my hybrid milling approach, how I use match planing to make tight panels, smooth planing to prepare for finish, and how I size everything to get identical parts using nothing but hand tools…plus a little clarification on hand saw vocabulary. All in all a great hand tool time was had full of saw dusty goodness and lots of gratuitous wispy shavings. I hope you enjoy it.

Do you have any thoughts on tooth configuration for a panel saw? I have a few rescued saw blades in my shop that need retoothing and new handles, and some of them are going to have to be shortened. So I’m interested to get your opinion.

well since a panel saw will primarily be used for stock around 3/4″ thick and thinner and its job is to cut precisely and cleanly you probably want at least 8-10 teeth in the kerf rather than the typical 6 teeth for a rough dimension handsaw. That being said, I really like my 10 tpi rip panel saw and my 12 tpi crosscut panel saw for this

Nicely done. The little details as you go along are great gems of smart building.

Thank you.
