Popular Woodworking’s Sawbench DVD
I don’t need a sawbench, I just built one as part of a lesson at The Hand Tool School. There is something that fascinates me however about this useful little shop appliance. A quick Google search will yield more designs than one could make in a lifetime as woodworkers the world over are constantly updating and tricking out this most useful tool.
So when Popular Woodworking announced they would be filming a live class on building a sawbench I was intrigued. If you don’t have a sawbench, then this DVD will walk you through the steps to build one. It is the next best thing to actually being there. It could be even better actually since you will be in your own shop with your own tools. (wearing whatever you want…)
Beyond the sawbench project however are some great tips for building by hand. Christopher Schwarz covers sawing, and half lap joinery in great detail in an applied format which I firmly believe is the way to learn. For example, he talks about milling your boards for the legs and walks through the process, but stops short of the opposite face and edge because those will not need to be used as reference faces for this project. The same thing applies to the joinery instruction. Laying out the joints and fitting them on the actual projects is so much more valuable.
This in the shop instruction is what we all seek when we sign up to take a class at a school. It is an in depth and intimate approach that frankly is what has made podcasting so popular lately. To see this kind of product come out of a traditional print media outlet is very exciting.
I highly recommend you pick up a copy of this lesson. You will be surprised what you learn building this highly useful project. Click the image below to get your copy and support the show at the same time since it is an affiliate link.
