Workbench QA: Do I Want Hand Planes for Milling?

I got a question from Joe wondering which hand planes would be best to replace a planer and jointer since he can’t afford to buy those tools yet. I spend some time talking about planes for milling then broach a bigger subject about whether this is the best route to consider for the power tool or hybrid woodworker. Regardless of whether it is right for you, I don’t think going the hand plane route will be that much of a cost savings over the power tool route.
