Bungee Lathe Part 2

In this video I complete my construction of the backyard bungee lathe. This time I make the 2 moveable poppets, install the ball bearing live centers, and make the tool rest. I didn’t capture any footage of making the treadle but it is nothing more than a couple half laps and some slats screwed in place. They key is to make it strong but as light as possible so your bungee doesn’t have to fight the weight of it.

I post more videos in the future of the lathe in use as I build some projects on it. Of course if you want more foot powered lathe action then check out Semester 5 of The Hand Tool School. Its all about lathes and turning!

This is great. Shannon! You are really getting really good at being able to explain something in a very concise way and the project is awesome!

🙂

Thanks Mike, I try to save my long winded personality for Hand Tool School videos.

Very nice. Again, love the idea of being able to turn outside. I never considered the weight of the treadle in relation to the pull on the bungee, but that’s good thinking to keep it light. I probably need to replace my spring pole as I think I think it was still too green when I started using it. And I’m sure, now that you mention it, my weighty treadle didn’t help matters. It now has formed itself into a permanent downward arc. Live and learn.

I remember a Woodwright episode where Roy mentions how a green pole will take a set after a while and cautions against using a Spring pole over a spring pole 🙂

Excellent work! Thank you very much for sharing. As said above, your videos are concise but informative!

Great build Shannon. It looks nice and is really functional.

Your videos are some of the best around too.

I had a mental block while trying to think of a good solution for spacing on the tool rest of my spring pole lathe. Those spacers are a nifty idea. Thanks!

Wish I could claim credit for it. I stole the idea from some footage I saw from this year’s Bodgers Ball in the UK. Hope it works for you.
