New Shop Lights & Hiding Your Nails on Mouldings

Seek Out the Deep Dark Corners of Your Moulding

This week I show off my new track lighting and smart bulbs in my shop. For me these lights serve 2 masters: woodshop and film studio. So my set up may be a bit different than a lot of you, but embracing task lighting over banks of fluorescent lights is a major step forward for any hand tool shop.

Then I answer a question about nailing moulding to a case and how to hide the nails so you don’t have to mess with wood putty that usually makes things more obvious.

I am looking to redo the lighting in my shop. I currently have fluorescent lights. I was thinking about replacing them with LEDs, but then I saw you used track lighting. I think that for some parts of my shop it would be a better solution. Can you share the brands and types of lights you used?

The track and connectors and the pendant lights are all Livonia picked up at Home Depot. The led bulbs are all Phillips Hue smart bulbs

Beware LEDs. While the light from them, at least the daylight spectrum bulbs, is very good, there’s a bit of a scam going on. These bulbs, which carry a premium cost, have been dimmable, which I am in favor of and use as often as possible. But Home Depot and Lowe’s, among others, are now carrying non-dimmable LEDs. They are cheaper than traditional LEDs, but way more expensive than CFLs. And the expected longevity has dropped dramatically so they now have the same duration as the CFLs. Oh, and the lumen output has decreased. The CFLs, while not dimmable, are a great option, as long as you are willing, as I am, to return the used bulbs back to the stores due to their (very low levels) of mercury.

Brilliant! I have track lighting in my shop and love it for all the same reasons. But, I don’t have the ability to remotely control like you do. I can only on/off/dim. With the common track that powers them all, how are the individual lights controlled.

Thanks Shannon!

There is an app on my phone where I can access every bulb individually and change the color and brightness. Or I can create “scenes” where I set the color and brightness of each bulb in a group. I can then select those scenes either from the app or from the pull down notification screen on my phone, or by a wireless switch on the wall that has 4 programmable switches.
