RWW 115 Refining A Swollen Dovetail Joint

Have you ever cut dovetails, dry fit them for a great fit, then not glued them up for several months while you work on other aspects of a project? Depending on the time of year you could be in for a surprise when it comes time to finally glue together that joint.

Here is a quick hand tool tip on easing the fit of those dovetails without the risk of opening up gaps in the joint.

helpful video, Shannon–thanks! I’ve had good luck using a float for this operation…the width of the float usually covers the whole height of the pin and its smooth back allows me to put even pressure on it comfortably….I don’t know what possessed me to buy a float before ever using one, but its one of the handiest tools on my handtool rack, especially when I’m fitting joints.

This is a great tip! I have used floats to tweak tenon joints but it is usually to remove more stock that I was trying to do here. I imagine I could accomplish that same thing with 1 or 2 passes with one of my floats.
