RWW Podcast #106 WoodRiver Bench Plane “Out of the Box” Test

Let me start by saying that this is not a fair test. No manufacturer claims to be ready right out of the box and really means it. There is always fine print saying that blade honing is required for the optimal performance. However, I know I’m not the only woodworker to buy a Lie Nielsen or Veritas plane, pull it out of the box, wipe off the lacquer and go to work. Those planes pull up beautiful wispy shavings literally right from the box. Do they work better when the iron is honed properly? Absolutely. So it was natural that I wanted to put this new WoodRiver #3 plane to the same test and see how it stands up. Watch and see!

I really like your website, I heard your pod cast on Matt’s Basement Workshop, good job. I have just started turning pens after doing the traditional woodworking for many years, you said on the pod cast that you can find some really nice wood for a cheap price since you don’t need must to turn pens, I agree.

Keep up the good work.

I use to keep a cotton towel or or plain cotton sheet over my tools in the summer. it all but stopped the surface rust on my tools in the humid summers here in Ohio.
