RWW 10: My Favorite Tool, the Spokeshave

This week I enter double digits in podcast episodes so I wanted to celebrate with starting a series on my favorite tool: the spokeshave. Over the next few weeks I will describe the shave, usage, sharpening, and finally building our own wooden bodied spokeshave.

If you aren’t familar with this wonderful tool, I hope this will give you the impetus to go out and try one. Dangerous curves ahead will no longer strike fear into woodworkers as this little beauty can tackle them all!

Pressure, Pressure, Pressure… 🙂 A woodturning Podcast? Did I say something about that? Yep, I guess I did and I am currently working with a blog designer. We are about three weeks out and the first Magic Woodworks woodworking podcast will be out.

Thank you so much for your plug, and I did not know that you had a dog that recently passed…so sorry. I rescued my dog three years ago when I walked up to the door of the pen at the SPCA and he stood up and put his arms around me. He found me! The SPCA fund raising effort will run all the way through January 1st .

Congratulations on going to double digits. I hope to be right behind you. I already have some great interviews lined up as well as a lot of footage shot at the lathe. Thanks again. Great Job!

I vote for a how-to on making a simple wooden spokeshave. I happen to have on my bench a Hock Spokeshave blade and plans by David Charlesworth. I got them from The Japan Woodworker. I really look forward to what you might put together.

Will,
The build your own spokeshave podcast is coming. I have a beautiful curly maple blank already picked out and a hardware kit from Veritas ready to go. It may take me a few weeks to get to it as I am in full production mode for my upcoming show in early December. Stay tuned it is on the way.
