RWW 199 Pencil Boxes

OK so I’m posting a Christmas present video after Christmas. What can I say, my elf duties were especially intense this year and by the time the big day rolled around (and Christmas 2 with other family on the 28th) I was tired. But finally I present a fun little project making sliding lid pencil boxes. These make great gifts, use up some scrap wood, and are also a great opportunity to try out some hand skills since these aren’t very complex in construction.

It says the video is “restricted”. Shannon, have you been hacking and posting videos from Area 51 again?

    Shannon

must be something on your end, cause it is playing just fine for me on multiple browsers.

Another great video, over 200 well presented and very educational videos. I’ve been following since before you built the roubo and would like to thank you for so many useful tips.
Did you ever do any video on building your very comprehensive tool cabinet? I seem to remember you doing a video on the French cleat to hang it but not sure about the build.
Anyways congratulations and many thanks

    Shannon

Yes and no. The cabinet build exists entirely within the confines of The Hand Tool School semester 1. It is the final project that combines all the skill taught in that semester.

Rudye

Shannon, how did you figure out the dimensions for the bottom panel of the box?

    Shannon

Nothing profound here Rudye. I left one end off the box so I could see the grooves then held my bottom panel up to it and make a pencil mark to match the groove to groove distance. Then after I had planed it to size, I took 2 or 3 additional passes along the edge to give the panel a little expansion room inside the captive groove.

Hey, I’m building a few of these as well. What size gouge are you using? I see that LV has multiple widths in the number 7 size.

    Shannon

I don’t remember actually I grabbed a gouge that was narrower than the thumb depression that I wanted. It was probably a 12mm.

That works; I’m clueless on carving tools so that will suffice as a starting point. It’s a whole other world of tools.

I love this video! I’m new to your site and wish I had found it much earlier. You explain each step very clearly and the video is wonderful.

I have one question. When you cut the half-lap joint for joining an end and side piece, it seems like the width of the kerf will cause a problem, if I’m thinking about this correctly. When the end and side are brought together, the grooves won’t align exactly, but will be misaligned by the width of the kerf. (Also the bottom edge of the end won’t align exactly with the bottom edge of the side, and the same for the tops.) What is done about that? Or is it ignored?
