Shop Update for 4/14/17: Chairmaker’s Lathe Tool Rest

Chair and Table Legs Made Easier with a Long Tool Rest

Turning flowing curves and long cylinders and tapered legs is much more difficult when you have to stop mid curve and move the tool rest. Inevitably you have to clean up little bumps and hiccups in the curve where you try to pick up the curve again. After seeing “real” turners and chairmakers use long 20-30″ long tool rest to great effect, I decided to stop stalling and make one for my own lathes.

And hey, metalworking! I guess I am a Maker after all!

What a great idea and show this was I learned a lot . And i now know what 90/10 is ( i was calling 90/90) i’m lucky I have 2 hardwood dealers and a mill i can purchase my lumber from and i find all 3 very friendly also i find if there slow these guys are great they will even show you the ‘specials” where i have found some really good deals. Thank You for all the information.

Thanks for doing this Shannon! I do typically bring a block plane, always ask before, and have never been turned down. I won’t bother with it unless I come across a collection of boards that are so thoroughly oxidized that I can’t predict the color. I also always sweep up any shavings.
